Kevin Wada does a lot of bold, comic influenced portraits. He uses watercolors mostly, in a wonderful way that can mimic smooth skin as well as textured fabric. My favorites are his high fashion portraits of X-Men characters. Yeah, you read that right. I love people that mix comics with contemporary popular culture.
