Car Show Birthday Party

Wednesday, March 11, 2020

I'm so excited to share this party with you guys.  Ronan has a little obsession with wheels, so when I was dreaming up a theme for his 2nd birthday party I knew cars had to be involved somehow. Because a two-year-old isn't really familiar with the whole concept of birthdays yet, I took some of the pressure off by trying to just plan a day that would make him HAPPY. I was talking it out with my husband on the way home from shopping one day, and out of my mouth spilled, "Oh, he would love a car show." And instead of just moving on to the next idea, because admittedly that one sounded a little ambitious, the thought embedded itself in my mind. By the time we had gotten home, I had called more than one member of my family and dreamed up a whole plan.

I suppose, to make myself look a little saner, I should include the fact that my husband and I both own sporty cars, and my dad owns a few old vehicles. So when I landed on the "Car Show" theme I knew that we would be able to stock the show with our own vehicles, so anyone else who brought one was just icing on the cake.

The brilliance of having a theme like "Car Show" is that the decorations could be as simple (or complicated) as I wanted. I went the simple route, with the thought behind the color choices and the general mood being "vintage small town."  Since I live in a little adorable vintage small town, the location really set the stage. All I did was amp up the cute factor by making some bunting out of colored paper and twine.

Our other big DIY for the day was our favors. In the spirit of car shows, we gave every participating car a ribbon that Ronan himself helped create. The center of the rosette was created with the "tire painting" technique (aka driving the cars through the paint then across the page). Then there was a layer of paper, which we hot glued ruffly ribbon to, then the ribbon that hangs down, then finally another circle of paper on the back. It was a bit of work (took about an hour and a half to make a dozen or so), but I love the way they turned out. And I've seen a few of the ribbons tucked away in the houses of relatives, which is so sweet.

The food was simple and classic. We are very away of the fact that Ro having an October birthday means that almost every party would involve some sort of bonfire (which I am perfectly fine with, we love roasting hot dogs!) A few bottle sodas and mini cupcakes rounded out the food table and put the spotlight on the best part of the edibles: the birthday cake.

While this birthday cake was amazing looking, I'll tell you a secret: it was so simple. I borrowed inspiration from this cake I found on Pinterest. The cake is a store-bought angel food that I took attacked with a spatula to smooth it out. Then I crushed some chocolate and filled the center, placed the dump truck on top, and arranged the leftover chocolate to look as if it were spilling out the dump truck and down the side. I added two construction cone candles that I found at Target and it was the cutest dang cake I ever have seen.

I am a firm believer that parties should include at least one planned activity, so to add some fun to our event I bought these wooden cars from Amazon. I set up a table with paint and brushes with a sign that gave people the option of painting a car for Ro or taking it home. Most chose to give their masterpiece to the birthday boy, so we now have a wonderful collection of custom cars that were created by the people that love Ronan most. The only regret I have is that I didn't ask people to sign them. On that note, if you painted a car and you remember what it looked like, please tell me which is yours, haha!

In the spirit of honesty, this day started out with my phone taking a bath with my child, leaving all of the last minute details and picture taking to be done with my husband's phone (he was such a good sport about it, though.) That, plus a few other mishaps that were beyond my control, could have taken a wonderful day and made it stressful for me and unenjoyable for the birthday boy. But with the support of my family, who took a few hours out of their day to help prep for the party, I was able to really relax and enjoy the event. The theme had a very hands-off vibe that was truly great. It allowed me to really enjoy my time with the monster, and all of the people we love.

Dragons Love Tacos Party

I love dragons, and I love tacos, so when I decided I wanted to do something special with my family for my birthday, it really just made sense that we would have a "Dragons Love Tacos" party. (Obviously. ) So that's what we did! (Except, because we are not dragons, we did have spicy salsa. Sh, don't tell.)

In case you haven't heard of it, Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin is a bestselling children's book all about dragons who love tacos. The problem is, while they will eat boatloads of tacos, even one hint of spice will make them spew fire everywhere. This adorable book is written in a casual voice that makes it tons of fun to real aloud.

Of course, if you know me at all, you have probably figured out that what really draws me into books is the illustrations.  This book is no exception. The playful lines and speckled backgrounds make for an iconic style specific to this series.

So speckles were the base I used for my table. Specifically a diy splatter painted tablecloth. Using watered down tempera paint and an old brush, I set out my plastic white tablecloth and started to make a mess. It took some time, but was well worth it. This subtle detail really hinted at the book in a subconscious way.

The place settings were simple but on theme. Everyone got a dragon with their own salsa jar.

To make both the invites and the salsa jars I just used plain white copy paper and colored pencils. The beauty of this artistic style is that you can use your normal sloppy handwriting to create everything! If you are nervous about spacing, I would suggest you lightly plan everything out in pencil first.

The favor/activity for this party is sure to be a hit... Salsa Slime. Using clear glue, slime additive, food coloring and pony beads I was able to create a very satisfying salsa slime.*
*Now with spicy jalapenos. :)

Another activity idea is put out the dragon fires. Use tissue paper to create a small fake fires, then have them throw small blue balloons at it.

I think the really great thing about this party theme is that the food is really a no brainer. Tacos! We always set out our ingredients and let everyone make their own. You can even have dessert nachos! Break some chocolate waffle cones to use as a base. Add plops of ice cream, chocolate sauce, and sprinkles and serve in a bowl. Yuuum!

Pack up their dragons and salsa into a Taco Cave take out bag (created with black marker and craft paper bags), and your party is complete!

Night Sky Family Night

Sometimes you just need a little party in your life. Like... a dinner party for just your family, nothing fancy, just something a little be more than normal. With that in mind, I created this themed evening for two- myself and Ronan- that was centered around one of my favorite things - the summer night sky.

This night started at the dinner table. Using things that I just had around the house, the centerpiece was a tray full of containers of varying heights holding sparklers, candles, matches, etc. I was going for a textural melody that was also functional. I was enchanted by the colors of these blue enamel camping plates, really I think they are what inspired this whole thing, so I used them as the pop of color among the gray tones. Then I topped off the place setting with a simple star crown that I created with paper and tape, using the same technique you use for a paper people chain.

To stay within the theme of the night, we created a few simple star crafts. Using dark blue tempera paint (created with a mix of normal blue with a bit of black in it), we painted sticks to match the night sky. Perfection wasn't necessary, so even my almost-2-year-old could help with this. We let the sticks dry, then I hot glued them into a star shape. We added a string and hung them up, giving Ronan a chance to point show them off every time I asked him where the star was.

For our second art activity, we painted some heavy paper with the same dark blue paint and glow in the dark paint. I cut both of the papers into stars and put them in a jar to be used later during storytime.

I like to keep themed baskets around the house for Ronan to enjoy. This storytime basket included an adorable starlight that we played with in our forts, the jar full of stars that I mentioned earlier, and a ton of books. The Stars by H.A. Rey is a simply beautifully designed book that is full of information. Moon by Britta Teckentrup is a beautifully illustrated peek through book that goes through the phases of the moon. Starry Skies by Samantha Chagollan was a book with glossy/raised constellations that Ro loved to touch. I particularly loved the Stars book by Mary Lyn Ray. It had a great message, and after reading it I painted a special silver star just to be kept in Ronan's own pocket.

Some other books that were in the basket where Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin HenkesOnce Upon A Starry Night by Jacqueline Mitton, and Faces of the Moon by Bob Crelin.

Because of the simplicity of this theme, there are a ton of other activities that could be easily incorporated to make it a fun-filled night. Backyard camping, firefly catching, sparklers...  I think that anything that makes you get that warm feeling of a classic summer night is the perfect addition.

Printable "Thankful Tags"

Lately, I've been inspired by interactive installations.  I love that the art pieces that are formed as much by the participating audience as by the artist themselves, like this piece installed in the Make-A-Wish Foundation's Seattle office. I really wanted to make one for myself, but obviously, I don't have a gallery to display such a piece in. But what I do have is a house and a holiday coming up.
So I ended up making some small installation piece to be used during Thanksgiving, which double as really easy Thanksgiving decorations. These are just simple tags that ask people what they are thankful for. Hang them in your living room, in the doorway, from the ceiling above the table, anywhere that needs some extra this holiday season. If you would like to add these to your own home, scroll down to get the link to the pdf!

You can download the thankful tags kit here.

Bonus: These tags match the Thanksgiving Kit I created two years ago, which includes a gratitude journal, place cards, and invites!

INVITES + INSPIRATION: 4th of July

When I think of the 4th of July I think of sparklers and bonfires, fireworks and picnics. The movie Sandlot is my go-to for the 4th of July. There's something about that retro charm that is perfect for this holiday. My ideal Independence Day party would be spent enjoying cool breezes and roasting hot dogs, watching movies outside while eating ice cream and then enjoying fireworks cuddled up with the ones I love.

Last year I made some sparkler packets to sell at the town's farmer's market on the 4th. They were such a cute idea that I knew had to make up a template to share for the holiday this year.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

DIY: Floral Place Cards

Saturday, March 26, 2016

Okay, this is a super easy and super cheap (if you shop at the right places) craft to do to make your dinner party just a bit fancier. And after your party is done, guests can take home this little arrangement and use it a cute decoration!

Supples:

(I got most of these things from the dollar store,
so in the end this craft costs about $10.)

fake flowers
floral foam
paper (I used watercolor paper)
scissors
wire cutters (optional)
tape
ruler

1. Cut your flowers, leaving about 1 inch of stem. (If you're going to use scissors, make sure it's an old pair.) If you're lucky enough to have wire cutters, I suggest using them. Don't throw away the leftover leaves! You'll need them to fill out your arrangement.

2. Measure your floral foam. (Side note: the foam is messy. Make sure to work somewhere that's easy to clean!) Cut the paper so it will be about half an inch taller than your foam. It's easiest if you can cut one long strip. Use a pencil to mark where the edges will end, and fold the paper into a frame, making sure to overlap on one side.

3. Wrap the paper "frame" around your foam, as tight as you can. I used clear tape on the outside to fasten the paper. It's not very elegant, but trying to tape inside while the foam block is in there is super annoying.

4. Pick your flowers and start poking them into the foam! I used a large flower placed to the side to take up most of the arrangement, making it a focal point. Then I placed leaves and the small green flowers to fill up the extra space.

5. Cut a square card, write the name, and set it into the arrangement. And you're done! Simple, right?

Quirky and Fun! (One Table, Three Ways)

This is the third and final table from my "one table, three ways" series! I had a lot of fun putting this together, so I might do it again sometime. This week I featured a series of tables that I styled to fit a certain theme. I used the same base components for each setting, (placemats, plates, silverware and a "menu") and then added things from around my house to make the look fit the theme I had in mind. The goal was to create something that would be easy to replicate, but could also be used as inspiration for something better!

For this table I just went for a general quirky and fun theme. I knew that my base was pretty plain, so I wanted to add lot of color to make it a little more inviting.

I knew I wanted to use candy as a centerpiece, but when I put it in a bowl it all looked very... flat. I looked around for some other type of vessel, and my eye fell onto my bar cabinet. I pulled out three pretty vintage wine glasses (which I bought at Goodwill... they always have a few) in varying sizes and filled them up with candy. Instant centerpiece that looks a little more classy, but was super easy to make. I added my dino shakers and a little bit of confetti and the table looked like it was ready to party!

I love the idea of leaving out some disposable cameras to document the night in a way no one really does anymore. I didn't have any disposables on hand, so I replaced them with Polaroids for this photo shoot. I think either way adds a unique twist to the dinner, and you'll have memories you can hold on to or give away when the night is said and done with.

These place settings had a lot of little extra things to help along the "fun" theme. I had cloth napkins with lots of different colors (thanks, Mom!), which really added to the overall randomness of the table. I also included a lot of cheap quirky things at each spot, including some costume accessories and a toy (both of which you can get at a dollar store, usually in the party section). I also added some fun things for their drinks, like a bendy straw and an umbrella!

Just in case you guys were curious, here are the links to the things you saw in every post:

Cheers! (One Table, Three Ways)

I'm back again with another party setup! This week I'm featuring a series of tables that I styled to fit a certain theme. I used the same base components for each setting, (placemats, plates, silverware and a "menu") and then added things from around my house to make the look fit the theme I had in mind. The goal was to create something that would be easy to replicate, but could also be used as inspiration for something better!

This table was created with a group of guys in mind. I kept the decorations simple and masculine, while still adding some quirky touches.

The "centerpiece" is just a variety of beers and brews that I pulled out of the fridge. Obviously you'd want to us this as a sort of sample and keep plenty of cold drinks on hand. If you can serve the brews in a chilled stein it's extra awesome. Just throw the glasses in the freezer and grab one out whenever you pour a new drink. Practical? Not really. Cool? Heck yeah. One could even say its... ice cold. (Hardy har...)

I used bar towels instead of napkins, because if you're going to have beer, you will eventually need some heavy duty cleaning supplies.  I also substituted the traditional glasses for beer steins.
While favors can be a cheesy concept, I couldn't help but add a little bit of quirk to the table. The mustache tattoos add a subtle bit of fun, and the bottle opener is a practical and affordable gift that they can take home.

How hilarious is it that that beer is called "Big Butt"? My friend showed it to me one day and I couldn't get over it. I guess I'm still a twelve year old on the inside.

We've got one more quirky table left to go. I hope you're enjoying this series as much as I enjoyed making it!

Game Night! (One Table, Three Ways)

Tuesday, January 19, 2016

This week I'm going to show you three different ways to style a tablescape for a fun themed dinner! I used the same base components for each setting, (placemats, plates, silverware and a "menu") and then added things from around my house to make the look fit the theme I had in mind. I hope this helps inspire you!

My first dinner's theme is GAME NIGHT. I went for a casual, fun vibe with a little bit of a modern twist. I have to admit, while I was putting this together I kind of wanted to just clear away the plates and play some games myself! Maybe I can convince Adam to play something with me...

After looking at these photos, I'm realizing the color palette of my table ended up having a ton of blue. That choice was purely made based on what napkins I own! The great thing about a theme like this is any color will do perfectly.

For the centerpiece I gathered up a few of our favorite games and put them in to glass jars. I love being able to display things that we usually overlook. Uno, dominos, and my Apples to Apples dice game added the perfect amount of color to the table, and putting them in glass makes the colors bounce around and gives it that extra edge of unexpected. (There's some things I ask myself every time I do things like this. Like "why do I have so many glass containers?" and then, in the next three minutes I'll be thinking "I need to buy some more glass containers..." I have a problem.)

Whenever I think about an event, I always try to include something to do during those "bored" moments. For this one I gave each place setting it's own little game as a favor! You can buy your own maze puzzles at a dollar store. I got those adorable straws from Hobby Lobby (I stockpile them).

I also put a pencil and some paper at every place setting, because you always need to add sometime or jot down points while playing games.

I hope this gave you some inspiration, or at least made you want to go play some Uno. Be on the lookout for more silly tables later this week!
