Bullet Journaling: 1 Year of Experiance

Okay, so I can honestly say this has BY FAR been the most effective journaling/to do/brain organization method I've ever used. It's hard for me to keep anything up for longer than two weeks, so the fact that I was able to maintain this for over a YEAR really means something.

Bullet Journaling (officially) is a concept developed by a guy named Ryder Carroll as a way to catalog his thoughts and keep on top of his tasks. It's a system of symbols and lists that makes it easy to see what you need to do at a glance.  If you want the best explanation you can possibly get about bullet journals, check out the website bulletjournal.com.

Bullet journals basically need two things to make them function... an index and a key. Honestly I only use the index regularly. It's not even a revolutionary idea, but it has kinda changed my life. Or at least my list making habits. At the start of the notebook, you keep a couple of pages blank for your index. Then, as you add lists, you write the page number and the topic in your index.

After your index pages, you just dive into putting pretty much whatever you want into your journal. I usually have a few standard things that I include in every journal: a list of short-term goals and long-term goals, a monthly calendar to keep track of appointments, a habit tracker, and, most importantly, my daily log.

The daily log is where the key comes in. It's a hybrid of a to-do list, a day planner, and a journal, where you list off random thoughts and use bullet points to organize what kind of thought it is. So, I use just a dot for a task, and mark it off with an x when I complete it. Then any thought or event I want to remember I just use a dash for. Sometimes I make my key a little more complicated, but I always end up coming back to dashes because I can't remember the rest of the symbols, haha.
I was worried about how my bullet journal and daily log would work once I became a parent, but man is it handy to have around! I am able to write down all the little adorable (and not so adorable) things that happen so I can come back to them when I fill out calendars, baby books, etc. In fact, if you look in the collage below, the "holy poop!!" entry was the day I found out I was pregnant. :D I used it to religiously to track our feeding schedule when we were still getting the hang of that. Right now I have a page dedicated to what new foods we are trying and when, and I have another one that's our babsitting/day care schedule. I'd be lost without it, I swear.

There are a lot of other pages that I don't put in every volume but I loved having. Playlists are always great because I feel like music can take you back to a certain feeling so easily. Book lists are obviously something I support. One month I did a graphic novel list that I still go back to when I'm looking for suggestions. I folded up pages and taped them into the book to expand on ideas more than once, and last year I did my "inktober" drawings on sticky notes that I taped to the back page of my journal. I think random little pages like that are what take my journal from being just a planner to something more unique and game-changing.

Do I like bullet journaling? You could say that. Or you could say I love it, and it's become so routine to me it's like breathing, and without it I might die... but if you said that I'd call you dramatic, so let's just go with "I really like it." It's great for my forgetful self because I can look back on what I did last week. It's great for my unorganized self because it's an ongoing to do list that I keep in my pocket. It's great for my creative self because I'm constantly playing with fonts and layouts. And it's great for my office supply addiction because I now have a place to put all of the cute post its I buy. But maybe it's also not so great for my office supply addiction because now I have a reason to buy more. So that's it's one drawback... it makes you want to buy more sticky notes. If you can call that a drawback.

So if you want to create a bullet journal, and you're willing to risk feeding your office supply addiction, I say go for it. All you really need is a notebook and something to write with.

Here are some links to get you started:

bulletjournal.com - This is the end all be all guide to bullet journaling.
Field Notes - This is where I get all my notebooks. Obviously, you can use whatever kind of book you want... actually, this would probably be easier with a bigger notebook. I just am obsessed with the Field Notes brand and all of their amazing designs. Also, their books are durable, fit in your pocket, and come with grid paper. See why they're my favorite?
Bullseye's Playground at Target - The place that affordably feeds my office supply addiction.
Pinterest Board - Just a collection of cute ideas. There are so many creative people out there!

Go forth and journal!

Thoughts About the Baby: Birth

I'm not going to do a full-on birth story here because that's just not my thing, but I did want to jot down a bit of a story so I could look back on it later.

First things first, though. I know what you're really here for.  Meet our little Ronan, the cutest baby I ever did see. Doesn't he have a good face? I'm probably biased...

Onto the story! It begins a little randomly, with a little bit of explanation. Adam owns a Trans Am, and my beautiful baby is a Mitsubishi Eclipse. Both of these have very limited back seat room, so our transportation was kind of a problem. We'd been searching for cars for a while, but finally got to the point where we had to choose. Like now. So among all the other chaos that was our lives last week, we went car shopping. It was stressful and dumb and we have a beautiful new-to-us SUV but I'd rather never go to a big car dealer again, thank you very much.

Anyways, I think Ronan knew that was the last piece of the puzzle, though, because after I went in for my appointment Thursday (where I had scheduled to be induced the next Monday) I started feeling uncomfortable. I figured it was just from checking my cervix, which had left me feeling pretty ug before, and moved on. My mom and I walked around the stores a bit and then went home, where Adam and I made some spicy chilly and went to bed.

I blame the chili.

So the uncomfortableness never really left. At 1:00 am I figured I just had to poop. By 5:00 I was googling "what do contractions feel like" because I had always been told that they'd hurt my back and kind of travel from out to in, and these just felt like stupid bad cramps. By 7:00 Adam had basically become the only logical one (I was still in denial) and had started prompting me to get ready. By 8:00 I couldn't stand, and by 9:30 we were in the car. I white knuckled the whole hour we were driving to the hospital.

When we actually got there everyone was super sweet and so supportive and I'm guessing I was making some pretty intense "I'm in pain!" faces because they all were very supportive and kind. I got into my hospital room at around 11:00 and got an epidural which, for me, worked instantly and was very lovely, lasting right up until about the time I needed to push. Labor went well, and Ronan was born at 5:30 pm. 8 pounds, 11.5 ounces (yeah, ouch). 20 3/4 inches. Breathing, crying, perfect.

We decided to stay in the hospital for the whole next day and night and get discharged on Sunday morning. But when Sunday rolled around, the doctor came in and told us that Ronan hadn't pooped yet. At all. She explained that this could be caused by many things, some serious, some not so serious, and that they would like to put him in the nursery to be monitored overnight. At this point Ronan had only left our side for a few check-ups, and he had never been gone for more than an hour. I had had very little sleep.  They were telling me they were going to take away my baby. So I totally cried. A lot.

The next few days were incredibly stressful. The issue with Ronan was probably just blockage, but he was going to have to go through some tests to make sure. For me, it was just 2 days and nights of shifting between my room for a half hour of fitful sleep then back to the nursery to nurse. Exhausting, both mentally and physically.

Eventually, they did a test that helped clear out the blockage, and everything in his little body went back to normal. Amazingly, he honestly didn't really act that unhappy when he was all blocked up. It was like his stomach was a black hole. It was so weird. All of the nurses were instantly enamored with him, and they all helped us through this whole ordeal so well. I honestly don't know what I would have done without them. Probably just straight up went crazy.

We finally got to take Ronan home on Tuesday. The car ride home was peaceful, and the adjustment to being home with a newborn, while still stressful, was nothing compared to those worried filled hours in the hospital.

Now we are two and half weeks in, and everything has calmed down a bit. We are still figuring a lot of things out, but I already couldn't imagine life without him in it.

Thoughts About the Baby: Before

First of all, FAQ's.

When are you due? October 8th! (Yeah, the day this is posting! Send good vibes!)

Boy or girl? Boy!

Are you excited? Is there a word for excited and terrified at the same time? That. We're that.

Do you have a name picked out? Yes and no. We have a list, and we're waiting to see if something fits when we see him. I'll tell you a secret though: I do have a favorite.

Does the baby have a nickname? We affectionately call him monster. I tried to get everyone to call him goa'uld (Stargate, anyone?) but it didn't stick.

How did your pregnancy go? Quite easily, actually. The only things I can really complain about are heartburn and swollen... well everything. I never got nauseous really, and I was able to work up until this week, so I'd say I was lucky.

Did you have any weird cravings? No weird ones, but I did jump around between some abnormal food obsessions. There was a week or two when I had Starburst constantly. Bacon, cottage cheese, and lemonade also had their shining moments.

Is the nursery ready? So relieved to finally be able to say almost!

Whats the theme? Dragons! Subtly. Also monsters... and dinosaurs.... so basically mythical/extinct creatures?

Are you worried about the cats? Kinda. We have backup plans if everything goes horribly wrong, but obviously I'm hoping for as smooth of a transition as possible. But with two weird cats, who knows.

Am I ready to get him out of me? Yes and no. I'm terrified of labor, which is a given. So obviously not thrilled about that part. But the part where I get to meet this little guy and slowly learn what kind of person he's going to become? That sounds awesome. I'm sure I'll get swept up into the giggles and the coos and how great it feels to be near him when he's finally here, but right now I'm also trying to enjoy just sitting on the couch in the quiet, cuddling with my cats. I'm taking it one day at a time over here, especially with this being our first. I have no idea what the future has in store, but I'm fairly confident that we will be able to get through whatever challenges life throws at us.

Other random thoughts:

Water is constantly seeping out of every pore. If I lay my hand down on something it will have a thin sheen left when I pick it up. It's like the worlds worst superpower.

I miss my ankles.

My nails are FANTASTIC, which someone pointed out could just be because of the vitamins. Touche, and I guess I should look into vitamins for later.

Even though there are so many adorable things you see in these pictures, just know there are about twenty Ikea/Amazon boxes laying around my house. I mean, we take them out every week. They just multiply.

Favorite joke right now: "I'm basically a time lord." "Yeah? How?" "I have two heartbeats."

Cake and an Announcment

If you've read this blog long enough you'll know that I've got a huge crush on Katherine Sabbath's cakes. I've always wanted to try my hand at making one, so I decided the other day that life had given me a good enough reason to bake some sort of creative monstrosity. So here's my newest addition to the long line of weird looking baking I've featured on this blog.

The flavor of this cake was actually totally inspired by my go to Cold Stone ice cream order. The inside is two layers of vanilla cake with a layer of Butterfingers in the middle, and the outside is chocolate icing dyed black. The bark is made of white chocolate, with a recipe that I borrowed from Katherine Sabbath's own web page. (Be sure to check it out, it will have you drooling and running to the store to buy white chocolate). As is the tradition with this blog, and my baking in general, it looks a bit odd, but it tastes pretty good.

So I know that it's not strange for the inside of my cakes to be blue. I would dye all my food blue if I could get away with it. BUT this time there's a reason. This time I've dyed the inside of my cake blue specifically to tell the blog world that... It's a BOY!!

Sweet, huh? I can't get over that adorable profile. I've been pregnant for about 5 months now, and things have been going really well so far. I've been lucky enough to not have to deal with morning sickness, and as far as cravings go I have just wanted to eat a lot of cottage cheese, bacon, and fruit. And raspberry lemonade. Oh, and there was a week when I ate a lot of Starbursts.

We are currently working on a remodel of the upstairs so we can fit everyone into our tiny house. So far, as it usually goes with any sort of large scale house project, we've run into more problems than solutions. But we've got four months to work everything out, whether we like it or not! I'm confident that we'll get everything done, and this boy will have the cutest little nursery.

My husband and I are nervous but excited for our little monster to be born. I can't wait for all the awesome new memories our family will make. Do you have any advice for the upcoming months?

Why My Table Usually Has A Centerpiece

Short answer: it's not because we are just so fancy.

We were watching an episode of Star Trek the other day where Geordi was trying to convince Data he needed to train his cat. I, being the owner of two head-strong felines myself, chuckled and shook my head. Anyone who lives with a cat will tell you - you might as well try to train a dragon.

My two cats are a great example of perfect cat-i-ness. While absolutely wonderful a lot of the time, they still have those moments where I wonder if maybe they were put on this planet just to drive me insane. Our Russian Blue Stormadeddon (as in Dark Lord of All) is normally so docile and sleepy. Exception being during that magical cat time when their inner clock tells them it's time to MOVE. That's when he runs exactly two high speed laps around our house, or plays a high energy game of floor is lava. The other cat, Odin, is our real problem though. I'd say Stormy is calm 90% of the time. Odin, on the other hand, is not. White, deaf, and with more than a few anxiety issues, when this cat gets riled up he can sound like something straight out of a nightmare, and not even know why we are all glaring at him (Stormy included).

When I say you can't train a cat I might have exaggerated a bit. You can, sort of, train a cat. For example, you can spray it with water every time it gets on the counter, and eventually they'll stop getting on the counter... when you're around. The problem with cats is that they're smart. They figure out sneaky ways to get what they want. But I want to be able to drink without fearing for my drink's life. And to have glass things displayed, and to own nice furniture, and to have a tablecloth stay on the table instead of being jerked off when then cats decide the NEED to run across any available long stretch of clean surface.

So how do I deal with the whole "we can't have nice things" thing? Centerpieces. AKA: finding ways to work with my cats.  So I know my cats are going to tear across the table. It's in their hunting genes, I guess. My solution is to put up a heavy centerpiece and when I come home I just tug the anchored tablecloth back into place. Bonus for added cuteness. All that I want is to display pretty breakable things? Arrange them int a way that makes the surface crowded and unappealing to cats. Furniture looks like you rub on it with a cheese grater? Artistically drape a blanket across it.

I'm not saying this is by any means a perfect system, and often I still want to pull my hair out and lock them into one room for all off eternity. But learning the tricks to make living with these beasts totally worth it. Especially when we are all sitting on the couch and they curl up beside you, tuck their heads underneath their paws, and purr softly.

Yeah. Worth it.
